Folder Cache is a very simple utility that caches folders opened by Explorer.

  Requirements

Windows XP or later.

For the automatic monitor to work, Explorer Folder Options View Settings
should have "Display the full path in the Title Bar" and, if available,
"Display the full path in the Address Bar" checked. Also in XP make
sure under View Toolbars that Address Bar is enabled. After setting these
options, remember to push the "Apply To All Folders" button.

F1 Help while Popup Window displayed requires TreePad Lite 3 or higher.
TreePade Lite is free and available from here:
http://www.treepad.com/treepadfreeware/
If TreePad is not installed this Readme is displayed instead.

  Usage

Leave running in system tray. Press Shift-NumPadAdd
Hotkey to open Folder Cache Window. Select folders
and press the Open Button, Right Click the mouse,
or press Enter in the ListBox to reopen folders.

Pressing F1 while the Popup Window is displayed
will either show this help or fall back to
showing the Readme file.

  Input Line

Type into the Input Line and only items with that substring
will be shown in the list. Matches are not case sensitive.

Special characters:

'!' (exclamation point)at the start of the Input Line
negates or reverses the match. For instance !C: would
show folders not on drive C:

'|' Hitting Enter with the pipe character by itself on
the Input Line will browse to FavesSoft Hotkeys Page.

Anything after the pipe character is assumed to be a URL
and an attempt will be made to open the default web
broswer to that address(e.g. |www.favessoft.com)

';' Multiple folders may be entered on the Input Line
if separated by a semicolon. For example to open the
root folders of drives c d and e type:
c:;d:;e: and hit Enter while the Input Line has the
keyboard focus.

Paste:
Select a single entry in the ListBox, then Alt Click
the mouse on it to paste it into the Input Line.

  Stack Selected

Using the Stack Selected Button you can add items
to a queue that will be launched when you launch
selected items. This way you can narrow the list
using the Input filter, push some items on the Stack,
then do another search or enter item(s) in the Input Line.

Duplicate items in the stack are ignored.
Note that if no items are currently selected when you
issue a launch command, items in the Stack are still
processed.

To empty the Stack without launching, close the Window.

  Side By Side

Side by Side Buton will attempt to open all folders Selected in the list
along with any in the Input Line or Stack. The folder gathering is just
the same as Open Selected Button (with the exception that it does not
perform extra processing as Open Selected does, such as semicolon
separated items or urls written after the pipe symbol.)

Up to 8 folders will be sized and placed by FolderCache using
PercentMargin .ini file option. Greater than 8 folders and the
Tile Window API will be used. Tile Window will use all the space
up to the Taskbar(no gap.) The exception is if TaskbarGap.exe
is running. FolderCache will use a gap of 0 assuming TaskbarGap
has adjusted the work area accordingly. Taskbar Gap may be
downloaded from:
http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

Since The Windows Tile Window API will tile all visible windows
on the desktop, I minimize all windows before tiling. This avoids
editors, browsers, and other apps having their windows resized.

  Spin Button

The Spin Button controls the maximum number of folders
in the cache. The adjustable range is 10 to 64.

Note that the way the Spin Button/Numeric Input pair of controls act
is determined by Windows. They are controls in Windows system
DLLs. For that reason I can't get rid of their quirks. If you type
a number into the numeric input control, it isn't actually stored
until you hit the UpDown Arrow. So the easiest way to set the number
to the max, 64, is to type in 63 and click the Up Control.

  Menu Commands

Right clicking the mouse on the Tray Icon
displays the Menu.

  Open FolderCache

Opens the Popup Window.

Double clicking the Tray Icon also
fires this command.

  Last Fast Four Folders

Opens the most recent 4 folders in the cache.

  Set Hotkey

Allows you to change the hotkey via combo boxes.

  Set Fast Folder Hotkey

Allows you to set the hotkey for the
Fast Last Four Folders command.

  Set Search App Hotkey

A Search app on your system that opens with
a hotkey may be used from FolderCache. This
command allows you to set the hotkey.

For instance if you have Everything Search on
your system with hotkey Alt-Backspace, set this
as the search app hotkey. Whatever is in the
Input Line when you press ^c in FolderCache will
be entered as a macro after the hotkey is used
to open the search app.

Another example, you can set it to Control-Esc to
open Windows Search and paste in the text via macro.

  Choose Vista Color

If your system has Aero Glass enabled you may
set the background color for the Popup Window
and dialogs. The color select dialog itself
changes background color as preview.

  Choose Help Reader

Set location of TreePad help reader program. This
supercedes .hjt file association when opening F1
help.

  About Command

About FolderCache displays a dialog with copyright
and file version information.

  Visit Hotkey Page

Attempts to navigate to the FavesSoft Hotkeys Page
using the default web browser.

  Check for Update

Compares file version info and offers to download if
online version is newer. If the download succeeds,
the zip file and application folder will be opened
and the program will quit, to allow the files to
be overwritten with the newer versions.

  Show Readme

Displays the Readme.txt file for FolderCache if
it is located in the same folder as FolderCache.exe.

  Donate

Attempts to navigate to the FavesSoft Donations Page
using the default web browser.

  Middle Mouse Click on Desktop

If active, clicking the Middle Mouse Button when the
Desktop is the "active window" will open the PopUp Window.
Requires FolderCacheMouseHandler.exe be in the same folder
as FolderCache.exe.

(It's a good idea to left click the mouse on the Desktop to
make sure it's "active" before middle clicking.)

  Quit

Quit saves settings and data, then exits the program.

All FavesSoft programs are free for you to use at your
own risk. I hope you enjoy using my utilities.

Please use the Donate command in the Tray Menu to keep
FavesSoft.com online.

  revisions

v. 6.3.8.0 Updated Middle Mouse Click handler for better response.

v. 6.3.7.0 When adding to stack Tooltip displays info for 1 second
                instead of 1/2 second.

v. 6.3.6.0 Added code to add backslash to root folders in list.

v. 6.3.5.0 Single folder open is centered(roughly.)

v. 6.3.4.0 Folder opens now staggered.

v. 6.3.3.0 Shortened the PopUp Window open animation. The window should
now open by the time you can let go of the middle mouse button.

v. 6.3.2.0 Even if AnimateWindows is enabled, the PopUp Window will only
use it when closing without launching. This way the effect can
be enjoyed without the annoying lag during launch.

v. 6.3.1.0 Added AnimateWindows option to ini file. On by default. If set
to True or 1 it is enabled. Set to anything else(such as 0 or False)
to disable. If you don't like the small lag when launching folders
you may prefer the animation be disabled.

v. 6.3.0.0 Faster path validation should eliminate PopUp Window display
delay. Note, to avoid delay use mapped drive letters rather
                than unc paths.

v. 6.2.1.0 PopUp window opens with vertical effect, closes with fade.

v. 6.2.0.0 Updated valid folder path check to handle unc paths.

v. 6.1.4.4 Recompiled with AutoIt 3.3.8.0.

v. 6.1.4.3 Added slide and fade effects to About Dialog.

v. 6.1.4.2 Popup window fades on close.

v. 6.1.4.1 Updated Icon.

v. 6.1.4.0 Fixed popup window tab order.

v. 6.1.3.0 Ini option UseMiddleMouse may be set to either
True or 1 to enable. Any other value disables
the option. On program close it is set to either
                True or False.

v. 6.1.2.0 Minor code cleanup.

v. 6.1.1.0 Sort Button disabled during Input Line filtering.

v. 6.1.0.0 Added Sort button that toggles Alpha/MRU sort.

v. 6.0.2.0 Ini settings fix.

v. 6.0.1.0 Fixed bug closing mouse handler when main app closes.

v. 6.0.0.0 Added Tray Menu Option to middle mouse click on Desktop
                to open the PopUp Window.

v. 5.9.1.0 Minor changes to window layout code for Side By Side Button.

v. 5.9.0.0 MaxSideBySide has no effect if TaskbarGap.exe is running.
See Side By Side command info for changes in this version.

v. 5.8.2.0 Fixed .ini file save bug.

v. 5.8.1.0 Added PercentMargin .ini file option for Taskbar Gap size in percentage
of screen width or height. Valid range is 0 to 25. Default is 5.

v. 5.8.0.0 Only resorts to Tile Window API for more than 8 folders.

v. 5.7.3.0 Calculates 5% Taskbar Gap for 2 views Side By Side no matter which
edge of the screen has the Taskbar.

v. 5.7.2.0 Added delay to allow folders to open during Side By Side.

v. 5.7.1.0 Two views of one drive Side By Side now sets height at 95% of the Desktop
work area. Leaves room for stuff just above the TaskBar if you have it at the bottom,
such as RocketDock.

v. 5.7.0.0 Now Minimize All Windows is called before tiling Explorer windows.
This avoids editors, browsers, and other application windows resizing.

v. 5.6.0.0 Memory optimizations.

v. 5.5.2.0 Minor code modifications.

v. 5.5.1.0 Bug fix to eliminate dupes in ListBox.

v. 5.5.0.0 Now all tiling is done via Windows API with the exception of 2 views of the same
folder.

v. 5.4.0.0 Added MaxSideBySide .ini file option. Folders opened with Side By Side
Button will be placed side by side vertically. If this number is exceeded then a
WinAPI Tile function is called to tile them. This may tile other non Explorer
Windows, so I added the setting to minimize side-effects. The default setting
is 3.

v. 5.3.0.0 Now Side By Side Button works with folders in Stack as well as Input Line,
just the same as Open Selected Button. Fixed a bug where selections were not cleared
after Stack Selected Button pressed.

v. 5.2.0.0 Changed it so Windows Tile API is called if folders greater than 2
are opened using Side By Side Button.

v. 5.1.0.0 If Side By Side folders number greater than 3, a Windows API is
called to tile them on the desktop.

v. 5.0.0.0 Added Side By Side Button to tile 2 to 5 selected folders across the
Desktop.

v. 4.9.0.0 Revised Tray Icon handling. The icon no longer needs to be hidden
to prevent multiple windows being open concurrently.

v. 4.8.0.0 Fixed bug in Set Hotkey command.

v. 4.7.0.0 Set Topmost bit on PopUp Window.

v. 4.6.0.0 Added more Glass to Popup Window.

v. 4.5.1.0 Check for Update shows version number(s) in
Dialogs.

v. 4.5.0.0 Added Check for Update command to Tray Menu.

v. 4.4 Fixed bug where old hotkeys were not cleared when changing
hotkeys.

v. 4.3 Added Menu command to choose TreePad help reader.

v. 4.2 Added F1 Help while Popup Window open using
FolderCacheHelp.hjt file. Requires TreePad Lite 3
or higher.

v. 4.1 A pipe character('|') by itself entered in the edit box
will launch default browser to favessoft hotkey page. If
there are additional characters after the pipe character they
will be assumed to be a url and an attempt will be made to open
the default browser to that page.

v. 4.0 Now you may type more than one folder into the edit
box separated by a semicolon(e.g. c:\temp;c:\windows) and hit
Enter to open them.

v. 3.99 Bug fix. Running 2nd instance caused folder list
to be overwritten with an empty file.

v. 3.98 Added command to visit FavesSoft Hotkey web page.

v. 3.97 Updated code to use AutoIt3 v. 3.3.6.1.
Tray Icon Menu only opens with Right Click to avoid
"menu flash" when double-clicking.

v. 3.96 ListBox selections now clear when tabbing out.

v. 3.95 fixed ListBox focus glitch.

v. 3.9 Improved initial ListBox loading.

v. 3.8 Changed method for fix in 3.71.

v. 3.71 Added code to prevent hotkey from opening popup window while About dialog
is open.

v. 3.7 Tabbing into ListBox with no selections now selects the top item.

v. 3.61 Fixed incremental search allowing deleted folders to be put
back into the ListBox.

v. 3.6 Improved color background, text color combinations.
Added Spacebar and Up Down Left Right arrow keys to the list of hotkey main keys.

v. 3.5 Added support for more hotkey combinations.
Added error checking to detect duplicate hotkeys.

v. 3.4 Set Control Esc as the default search hotkey (Windows
Search.)

v. 3.32 Added selectable hotkey for Fast Last Four Folders.
If one of the 4 folders is an invalid path, 3.32 continues until
4 folders are launched, if there are enough in the list to do so.

v. 3.3 Added "Fast Last Four Folders" to Tray Menu.
To set this as default tray command, set the .ini file key
FastLastDefault=1. If set as default, a double click on the
Tray Icon would open the last 4 folders. Otherwise, the
Folder Cache main window would open as usual.

v. 3.21 Changed mouse double-click to act like Enter key.

v. 3.2 Added Control-C hotkey when Window open. To use, select
an item in the ListBox and press Control-C, or type some text in the
input filter and press Control-C. The Hotkey for your search app
will be sent, then after a pause, the text from the ListBox item or
input filter will be sent. If the Hotkey for your Search app hasn't been
stored yet, a dialog pops up to prompt you to select one. This is
stored in the FolderCache.ini file. To change the Search app hotkey,
use the command in the Tray Menu. There should be sufficient choices
in the SetHotKey Dialog to set a 2 key hotkey. 3 key combinations are
not supported. (Note: If you have a search program that is hard-wired
with a 3 key combnation you can always use AutoHotKey to create a
program in a few lines that listens for a 2 key hotkey and then sends
the 3 key combination the other program needs. See AutoHotKey
forum for help making these simple scripts.) OTOH if your search app
only uses a single hotkey, as example FARR uses the Pause key, just
backspance in the hotkey selection combo for an empty string or ""
to be returned for modifier. (If a main key is not selected it results in
an error.)

v. 3.1 Added ability to type the complete folder or filename
in the input line and hit enter to open that item, along with any items
currently in the Stack. While typing, if the path is valid, it shows
as bold text. Also note that if you hold down the Alt key and left
click the mouse on a single selected item, it will copy to the input line.
A way to save on typing some long paths. Note that if you right click
the mouse, selected items, items in the stack, and a valid item in
the input line will all be launched.

The Delete Selected Button now also clears the Stack. If no items
are selected when you press Delete Selected then a Tooltip shows
"Stack Cleared" to give some visual feedback.

(Note that the input line is the only way in Folder Cache to open
ordinary files, documents or programs.)

The idea is that if you pop up the window to launch a recent folder
and the one you are thinking of is not in the list, being able to just type
into the input filter avoids having popped up the window for nothing.
It's not meant as a replacement for a file/folder search tool.

v. 3.0 Added '!' negate special character to input filter.
Added Stack Button.

v. 2.7 got rid of error message if program launched when already running.
Removed progress bars as they don't look as good as I thought they would.

v. 2.6 added progress bar showing folder load progress on startup.
Also if Max Folders setting changed, progress bar will acknowledge
the change.

v. 2.5 added Glass to About dlg if Glass enabled. About dlg times out
in 10 seconds but if you hold the left mouse button down it will stay open
until the mouse button is released.

v. 2.4 now color pick dialog changes to the selected color as preview.
Added delay when double-clicking tray icon to avoid clicking the icon
that takes its place when it disappears.

v. 2.32 added "Vista Color" command to tray icon menu if Glass enabled.
No need to mess with .ini file to select color now. Added a few more
colors. Tray icon disappears while app is busy.

v. 2.3 background color of the main window and SetHotKey dlg is
now customizable on Vista & W7 with Glass enabled, via .ini file.

To set the color add this line to FolderCache.ini [Settings] section:
VistaColor=Blue

Currently supported colors are:
Black
Blue
Red
CadetBlue
Purple
Teal
SkyBlue
SteelBlue
Sienna

If VistaColor is set to something unsupported the setting defaults to Black.
If glass is not enabled or running XP then the default color for the theme is
used for the window backgrounds.

v. 2.21 delay path validation until window opens. Avoids deleting
network paths due to the app starting up before network drives are
mapped.

v. 2.2 reset to use theme compliant colors if Glass not enabled.
This should avoid XP form background color problems.

v. 2.1
added code to avoid trapping when no media in drive

v. 2.04
apiffed up Set Hotkey dialog with some glass
if running Vista or W7.

v. 2.03
changed main component of hotkey in .ini file to include
the brackets (e.g. {PgUp} instead of PgUp). This simplifies
hotkey assignment.

v. 2.02 Fixed hotkey assignment glitch.
minor modifications.

v. 2.0 Added command to Tray Icon Menu
to set the hotkey. The value is stored in the
.ini file along with the max folder setting.

v. 1.91 Added real double-click handling.
Added button to delete selected items.
Fixed hotkey so it doesn't interfere with
List selection.

v. 1.8 Added automatic horizontal scrollbar.
Changed program icon. Added Readme display
to Tray Icon Menu.

v. 1.7 Has vertical scrollbar when items exceed the size of the ListBox.
Also changing the Max number of folders is reflected the next time
the Folder Cache window is opened. For example if you reduced
the max below the current number of folders, on the next window
open the list should be trimmed to match.

v. 1.62 Pressing Enter key now presses Open Selected Button.
Note that if you press Enter in the input box to set the Max Folders,
it will also launch selected folders and close the window. But the
new Max Folders setting will "take" so I'll call it a feature instead of
a bug due to the convenience of hitting Enter to launch folders.

Added double-click simulation to open single folder.
Minor bug fixes.

v. 1.51 Added code to prevent opening 2 instances of the window.
Changed wording in About box and added a time-out. Added label
with usage information.

build 1.4.0.5 Fixed error if folder max number not present in folder file.

v. 1.4 Expanded the window a bit. At least with my default font 24 entries
fills the window nicely without scrolling.

v. 1.3 Fixed a regression introduced in 1.2 which caused the window to hang
after adjusting the folder maximum option.

v. 1.2 Added UpDown control to set the maximum number of folders.
Note that folders will not be trimmed from the List until the window is closed.

v. 1.1 Creates file FolderCache.txt in home folder on exit, with folder list,
and reads it back in on startup if it exists.
