Please read this document for up-to-date information about the ScanSoft PDF Create! 3.0. These release notes discuss the following topics:
“Designed
for Microsoft Windows XP” Logo Notes
The
following are the minimum system requirements to install and run ScanSoft® PDF
Create! 3:
¨
A computer with at least an Intel® Pentium® or
comparable.
¨
Microsoft Windows® 98
(from second edition), Windows Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP with SP1 or SP2
¨
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1 or above
¨
Applications associated to the file types to be
converted to PDF (for example Microsoft Word 97, 2000, XP or 2003 for .doc
files)
¨
64 MB of memory (RAM), 128 MB recommended
¨
30 MB of free hard disk space for application files
plus 5MB working space during installation
¨
5 MB for Microsoft Installer (MSI) if not present.
(This is present as part of the operating system in Windows Me, Windows 2000
and Windows XP)
¨
SVGA monitor with 256 colors, but preferably 16-bit
color (called High Color in Windows 2000 and Medium Color in XP) and 800 x 600
pixel resolution
¨
Windows-compatible pointing device
¨
CD-ROM drive for installation
¨
Internet access for activation and automatic
updates
Note: Performance and speed will be enhanced if your
computer’s processor, memory, and available disk space exceed minimum
requirements.
Note: Disk space and memory requirements may be higher
on some operating systems.
Please remove any version of the Zeon DocuCom
PDF printer driver utility before the installation. ScanSoft PDF Create! is a customized and updated version of that utility and it
cannot co-exist with other versions.
1. Insert the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive
The installation program will start automatically. If it
does not, locate your CD-ROM drive in Windows Explorer and double-click the
program’s setup.exe file.
Select a language for installation. The InstallShield®
Wizard will appear.
(If you have downloaded the program from the Nuance web
site, double-click its setup.exe file.)
2. Follow the on-screen instructions
You must accept the license agreement in order to
proceed. You must enter a serial number. You will find this on the CD sleeve or on
the Nuance web site at the download location. Be sure to keep the serial number
in a safe place; it is fully checked only during product activation and is also
needed for any re-installations.
The installer offers a default location for the program.
Accept it or define a different one.
3. Click Finish
Registration runs at the end of installation. Select Register
Online to establish a connection to the Nuance web site. We provide an easy
electronic form that can be completed in a few moments. When the form is
filled, click Submit.
If you decide not to register or to be reminded later, you
can go to http://www.scansoft.com/
to register online any time later. Click on Support and from the main support screen choose
Register in the left-hand
column.

4. Activate
You will be invited to activate the product at the end of
installation. Please ensure that web access is available. Provided your serial
number is found at its storage location and has been correctly entered, no user
interaction is required and no personal information is transmitted.
If you do not activate the
product at installation time, you will be invited to do this each time you
invoke the program. PDF Create! can be launched only
five times without activation.
Note: The user performing installation or
un-installation should have Administrator rights on the computer. Administrator
rights are recommended for activation and de-activation.
Note: You will be allowed to
re-install the program a reasonable number of times without having
re-activation problems, because un-installation includes a de-activation step.
The serial number is needed for re-installation and web access is needed for
de-activation and re-activation.
Network Installation: The program can be
installed on a server and pushed to local computers in a Local Area Network (LAN).

2. ScanSoft PDF Create! 3.0 Printer Driver Files
The installed
printer driver does not contain kernel mode components. The following

This
component uses several binary data files for different purposes. These files
are read-only files (with extensions .bpd, .pfb and
.tab) and are stored in the folder WINDOWS_FOLDER\system32\DocuComRes because
of compatibility reasons. These file extensions are stored in the registry
without icons and commands, since these files are only for internal use.
The printer
driver and PDF file creation settings are stored in the folder
‘ALL_USERS_APPLICATION_DATA_FOLDER\zeon\DocuCom\PDF

These files
are duplicated in the folder ‘CURRENT_USERS_APPLICATION_DATA_FOLDER\zeon\DocuCom\PDF Driver’ for each user who uses the
product.
Since these
files contain user-specific data and can be usable after re-installation of the
product, they are not removed by the un-installer.
3. PDF Core library
This
component is also a shared one, which manages the PDF files generated by the product.
It contains the following files installed in folder [windows_folder
]\System32

4.
Running PDF Create! 3.0 as a limited user
Product activation of PDF Create! 3.0 requires full access rights
for all users to registry entries
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ScanSoft\Shared\Products
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ScanSoft\PDF
Create 3.0
Privileges are changed during installation to provide access
rights to limited users.
5.
Migration from Windows 98 SE or Window Me to Microsoft XP
When the product is migrated to Windows XP the access right to key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Licenses has to be changed to Full Control for
Everyone. Otherwise the product cannot work. When the product is installed on
an XP originally, this key is created with the given rights.
